The coast maintains a reputation as one of the harshest places on earth, a graveyard of shipwrecks on the beach left abandoned and rusty, and their crew wouldn't have been spared. Well over 1,000 have met their end here and any ship that comes close to the coast is surely greeted with a ghostly fog covering the beaches, the constant surf delivers hell for any sailor.

The climate is highly inhospitable in this pitiless desert. We drive for hours and the air seems different here; my eyes struggle through the soft haze in the atmosphere and the road ahead causes optical illusions. It was nothing like what we had experienced further north, the only people we see are fishermen, heading through the sand to the raging waters with their rods strapped to the front of their vehicle. It looked as though they meant business, and I think to myself what kind of big fish are in those waters.

We view our map and see there is an attraction close by, a seal colony and since we haven’t seen many large shipwrecks about we decide to head there. Pulling up to the colony we get out of the car and the first thing that hits you is the smell. It was horrific, the stench of rotting meat and the salty sea air mixed together in the wind. The second was the noise. Grabbing my camera from the car, I put my hand over my nose and mouth as we head onto the viewing platform ahead.

Thousands of fur seals inhabited this part of the beach, the heat was extreme and I felt for these animals even though they had the water to swim in. I looked closer at the colony and as we walked we noticed that there were dead pups which had been trying to hide from the sun in the little shelter they had. It was nature at its truest form and there was no hiding from the fact this region gives no pity to the weak.

Death is omnipresent on this coast.
